Project Description:

Lucretia W. Edwards Shoreline Park is a two-acre park located on the San Francisco Bay in the Marina Bay Neighborhood of Richmond, California. Bounded by the Richmond Marina and office/commercial development, the park is part of a larger system of trails and parks that ring the Richmond Marina and connect to the 240-mile Bay Trail.

Design for the park was developed with the participation of public artist, Wang Po Shu, through the City of Richmond’s Percent and a Half for the Arts Program. The park design highlights the area’s wartime past by articulating the contributions of the Bay Area’s shipyards to the war effort. The overall landscaping and art elements trigger the curiosity of the visitor by providing a gentle discovery of the shipyard history of this site.

To highlight the area’s shipbuilding efforts, low seat walls are located in the park on axis with other Bay Area ship yards. The axes begin at the park’s highest elevation, in the center of the cul-de-sac that terminates Marina Way at the park. Inset into the top of each wall is the name of the Area shipyard; with which the wall aligns. Visitors are directed towards Bethlehem San Francisco, Hunters Point in San Francisco, Moore Dry Dock in Oakland, Marinship in Sausalito, and Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo. The ‘Riveter’ Rose is planted in between the walls. The rose, like the women of the time, can withstand the harsh coastal conditions.

Vallier Design Associates, Inc. provided complete landscape architectural services, including the revision of existing construction plans, and the preparation of specifications, bid documents, cost estimates and schedules for the building of Lucretia W. Edwards Shoreline Park.
